Cat & Mouse by James Patterson pages 236-269

The book continues with the assault of the entire Cross family. Alex Cross is the only one that is in critical condition. Alex's Nana Mama, daughter, and son have only been beaten by some mystery assailant. It starts with Alex's partner, detective John Sampson, as he navigates his way to the Cross house to see what has happened to his good friend. As John gets up close to The Cross's house he could see little Jannie Cross curled up in a ball on the porch. John could see that Jannie was harmed, she had blood on her nightgown and in her hair. As Detective Sampson navigated throughout the house he saw Alex's son, Damon, and one side of his face was beaten with one eye swollen shut. Then we meet a new character, Thomas Pierce, he is the Detective that is trying to work on the Mr. Smith case. Thomas has been transferred into Washington D.C. to try and figure out what has happened to Alex Cross. Thomas is a tall and slender man with long blond hair that was bound in a ponytail. Thomas is supposed to figure out who did this because Gary Soneji warned that he would get Alex even if he had died. Then Thomas says that it could not have been Gary, because Gary would have killed the two kids and the grandmother. Then Thomas Pierce and Kyle Craig rush to the hospital because Alex has gone into Cardiac arrest. After they realize that Alex is in a bad condition Kyle takes Thomas to see the grandmother. When Thomas meets the Grandmother she asks them to tell her the truth about Alex's condition. Then Thomas tells her all about the complications and what has happened, and how he might not make it.

I thought that this part of the book was a little bit sad. First, because the assailant that did this hurt Alex's two young kids, and hurt the grandmother. Also the entire time John Sampson was talking to Jannie Cross she was asking if her brother and dad were okay. Also at the end of the section how Thomas had to break the bad news about Alex to the grandmother. This section was sad because it showed how Alex getting shot affected his entire family
